One of the most beautiful museums in Queensland or rather in the whole Australia is the James Cook Museum in Cooktown, which is apparently called after its discoverer.
Housed in a stunning 19th Century convent building, the James Cook Museum follows mostly the story of James Cook, the famous, British navigator, who engrossed Queensland for the British crown. But it also engages in the exiting history of Cooktown itself, which is characterized by the colonization of Australia and the "gold fever".
The James Cook Museum in Cooktown, which was the first spot of the terra inkognita australis entered by British people, shows the dangerous arrival of Cook and his Endeavor crew at the Australian coast, first contacts between Cook and the local Gugu Yimithiir people and the studies committed by the British academics.
The highlights of the museum are the original Endeavor anchor and kanon, several items regarding Cook's history and galleries giving a fascinating insight into the culture and history of the Guugu Yimithiir people.
