German Maritime Museum Bremerhaven

The German Maritime Museum (german: Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum) is located in the old harbour city Bremerhaven. The open-air museum belongs to an exclusive circle of german museums which also conduct active researches. The academic main focus of the German Maritime Museum is on the investigation of "Shipping and the development of new worlds in the early modern period", "The German shipping in the 1920s and 1930s" and "Maritime Archaeology" in general.

The German Maritime Museum consists of a two building complex, several ships and submarine located directly at the Weser river. Amongst other things the museum offers also information about related issues like tides, classical and modern navigation, whaling and water sports.

Another highlight is the "Hansekogge" of 1380, an old wooden cog - this type dominated the European shipping between the 12. and 14 century. This ship type was used by german merchants, which were organized in the medieval trading community "Hanse". The "Hansekogge" of Bremerhaven is the worlds best-preserved exemplar of this sailing shipe type - the discovery in 1962 was a sensation.
