National Maritime Museums France

The "National Maritime Museum" of France comprises a network of five establishments, with the headquarters located in Paris at the Palais de Chaillot and annexes on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts.

 

The National Maritime Museum in Paris, which is situated in the Palais de Chaillot, one of the most beautiful monuments of the 1930s you can discover over a thousand extraordinary objects, model ships and machinery, naval souvenirs, figureheads, weapons and navigating instruments, which tell about the life onboard a ship, how boats were built and how sailors navigated the world from the 17th century to today. In addition to the parmanent collections thematic exhibitions are presented.

 

You can find another National Maritime Museum inside Brest Castle, an impressive medieval fortress and the city’s oldest monument, which offers a breathtaking view of the breath and the Penfeld River. Its collection retraces 17 centuries of the history of Brest arsenal and ocean-going fleets. Highlights of the many spectacular exhibits include masterpieces of ornamental carvings and naval construction.

 

The establishment in Port-Louis presents its collection in one of the most beautiful citadels on the French coastline, from where you can enjoy a clear view of the Lorient roadstead across to Groix island. It houses unique artefacts on the theme of sea rescue and with remains from wrecks brought up from the ocean on the subject of underwater archaeology. 

 

The one, situated at the heart of Rochefort's historic port hold an important collection of model ships, model dockyard machines and sculptures, which invites to dream of distant oceans and faraway lands.

 

The National Maritime Museum in Toulon can be found in the entrance to the Arsenal, next to the Clock Tower. Discover the history of the port, conditions onboard convict ships, the daily life of sailors, and follow the operations of the French nuclear attack submarines. Highlights include two large models of eighteenth-century vessels, the control panel of the Clemenceau and a model of the Charles de Gaulle.
