The crystal clear waters of the Mexican Caribbean draw many divers and snorkelers every year who are eager to see what they will find below the surface. Cancun offers a unique underwater museum that takes advantage of the high visibility by placing its art on the sea floor, MUSA - Museo Subacuatico de Arte (Underwater Art Museum).
Take the plunge when you visit one of the largest underwater museums in the world in Cancun's Marine Park. Four hundred original sculptures are displayed at various depths ranging from 9 to 20 feet. Jason deCaires Taylor, one of the artists, created an underwater exhibition called "The Silent Evolution" that offers both a contemporary and cultural view of how the Mayan people changed and grew throughout the year.
In the waters near Isla Mujeres is another sculpture called "The Dream Collector" submerged next to other unique pieces. The sculptures in MUSA Cancun are created from special materials which are said to promote marine life and were designed to eventually become artificial reefs. The longer the sculpture is in the water, the more it will change as coral and other sea life begin to call the artworks home.
